Holiday Weight Gain and Holiday Weight Loss Struggles

Is Holiday Weight Gain Inevitable?





As the holidays roll around, one thing is almost certain for most of us--we will struggle with holiday weight gain.

The issues surrounding the holiday weight gain go far beyond just consuming excess calories. Recent statistics state that the average holiday weight gain may only be as much as 1-2 total pounds, However, that is not the whole story since the weight gain remains and is ultimately responsible for adding on even more weight as the following year progresses.

It's extremely important to understand some of the reasons why we put on the holiday weight gain and why it's crucial to be prepared beforehand for those feasts.

1. Emotionally-Related

The holiday seasons bring with them the memories of times past. For some this is wonderful but for others it can be very difficult as they think of loved ones who are no longer wit them. The emotional strain often leads to stress-related eating in an effort to numb the pain. The food brings comfort and this cycle lasts beyond the holiday season. It can linger for weeks and even months.

In order to defeat the emotional roller coasters, it is imperative that you surround yourself with positive things that draw your attention past and beyond the holidays in front of you. Dwelling on the movies and music of any given holiday season can easily be avoided by choosing other forms of entertainment. Do not set yourself up for a fall. Create an environment around you that will keep you focused on your goals and healthy habits.

2. Calorie Overload

Holiday weight gain is not only due to a few extra calories, but excessive calories. In fact, one study revealed that the average holiday binge could total somewhere between 4000-6000 calories. This is enough to add one full pound of fat to the average person. That's a lot of unhealthy weight gain.

Although it isn't easy, it's important to try to fill up on more low calorie, fiber-rich foods like green vegetables and fruits. Just a few cups will cause you to eat less of the junk food and also help with negative hormone and blood sugar levels.

3. Metabolic Slur

Holiday weight gain only increases momentum as our metabolisms slow down due to lack of movement and negative hormonal responses. This metabolic damage not only lasts beyond the holiday season, but can become the norm for many as their bodies slow down in effective energy usage.

To combat this problem, you must try to go for long walks before and after holiday feasts. Recent studies show that people who walk immediately following their dinner meal, seem to stay leaner. However, a word of advice: immediately does not mean as soon as you finish. Give yourself a rest period so that your digestive system has a chance to work on the food. 15-30 minutes is sufficient.
